After a Pomona accident that killed a woman in her house, the driver has been sentenced to six years in state prison for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. PE.com reported on the sentencing.
The sentenced man, Carmelino Oliver Martinez Ordonez, pleaded no contest to the count according to the court record. According to the Pomona Police Department, Ordonez was going south on Hamilton Boulevard in Pomona at a high rate of speed.
He lost control of his PT Cruiser and crashed into a house. The victim was trapped under the car for around 20 minutes before her death. Later, evidence was found that Ordonez was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
Since the crash, Ordonez has been in jail. Now he will go to the state penitentiary.
We must always remember that driving carries a heavy responsibility, literally. Anyone could speed up and run off the road into a building to cause mayhem and property damage.
If someone is inside the home when such a crash happens, their life is in danger. Unfortunately, there’s not much property owners can do to protect themselves against a driver this reckless beyond carrying adequate insurance and seeking justice in the civil court system.
Our condolences go out to the family of the slain victim.
