Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department estimate that the driver of the SUV was heading southbound at twice the posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour. Eyewitnesses to the crash say that the driver was recklessly driving into the northbound lane of traffic to pass other vehicles before it collided with a moped and lost control. The SUV then struck a tree and a power pole before rolling into the front of the L & E Oyster Bar and a nearby ice cream shop. The SUV then caught fire.
The LAPD told reporters that a 68-year-old man, believed to have been the rider of the scooter, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. His identity has not been released pending notification of his family.
Authorities say that a 52-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman were also hurt in the crash. They were taken to an area hospital for treatment and are listed in serious condition.
Since the incident is currently under investigation, officials have not released any further details regarding the crash.
The building where the restaurant is located is due to be inspected by the L.A. County Building and Safety Department to estimate the condition of the structure.
The L & E Oyster Bar had just reopened for takeout and deliveries on May 27th following Coronavirus restrictions. The restaurant was not open, and no one was inside when the crash occurred.
A spokesperson for the LAPD said that felony charges might be pending against the driver.
