According to Fox 6 reports that Gracie, and Edward Contreras, were returning to their Covina home when their vehicle was struck by a carjacking suspect who was fleeing from police.
The carjacking was reported at approximately 9:00 p.m. that happened within the 15000 block of Badillo Street when the suspect commandeered a Jeep Patriot and took off toward West Covina. Police later spotted the Jeep at approximately 2:00 a.m. and attempted to pull it over, but the driver took off in an attempt to evade the officers. The Jeep collided with the vehicle that the Contreras family had been traveling in a short time later.
Authorities say that the force of the impact caused the Contreras’ vehicle to flip and both adults to be ejected. Edward Contreras, 55, was declared dead at the scene. Gracie Contreras, 55, was rushed to an area hospital for treatment of injuries she sustained in the crash. She died shortly after her arrival.
Gracie is survived by two adult children and her son, Jacob, who was in the car at the time of the fatal accident.
Gracie’s son, Jacob, is being treated for severe injuries, which will require multiple surgeries. Jacob was left with a collapsed lung, a broken leg, and several other injuries. The boy does not know that his mother and stepfather were killed in the crash.
The carjacking suspect was also taken to the hospital with injuries and will be booked into custody after his release for multiple charges in connection with the crash.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the funeral expenses of the couple and the continued medical treatment of the boy.
