An infant has died and two other children were injured after the children’s mother collided her SUV head-on with another. Authorities believe that the woman was possibly driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
KTLA Channel 5 in Los Angeles reporter Erin Meyers was at the scene of the fatal crash in North Hills on Tuesday morning. According to the report which appeared on the station website, the Los Angeles Police Department stated that the deadly crash happened at approximately 11:45 P.M. on Monday in the 15200 block of Nordhoff Street.
A woman, believed to be the mother of three children who were with her at the time, was driving her white SUV that collided head-on with a black Chevrolet Suburban SUV when she veered into oncoming traffic. Both SUV’s and at least two parked vehicles were damaged in the crash.
Firefighters and paramedics had to extricate the mother from the wreckage of her vehicle and suffered only minor injuries. She, along with her three children, was taken to area hospitals for treatment.
Among the injured children was a 4-month-old boy. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The infant later died as the result of injuries he sustained in the crash.
The infant’s twin, who was also in the vehicle, is reported to have suffered moderate injuries. A third child who is between 2 to 3 years old suffered head lacerations in the crash. Authorities believe that both will survive.
The driver of the black Suburban suffered moderate injuries and is expected to be ok.
Los Angeles Police investigators said that none of the children had been in an appropriate safety seat or restraints at the time of the crash. The mother, who is facing DUI charges, will probably also be facing murder charges.
