One man is dead and another person severely injured after an alleged DUI crash that happened in Elk Grove earlier this month.
The Sacramento Bee recently filed a report on its website about the incident that happened on November 10th when a northbound driver ran a red light and crashed into an SUV.
A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol Sacramento Division said that at approximately 8:00 p.m. Steven Bhardwaj, 33, of Plymouth was driving northbound on Bader Road when he blew through a red light at an intersection and broadsided a Toyota SUV. The force of the impact sent both vehicles over a sidewalk and pushed the Honda into a utility pole.
Bhardwaj had a 35-year-old man and 51-year-old man in the vehicle with him at the time of the crash.
Emergency crews arrived on the scene and began CPR on the 35-year-old man who had been riding in the front seat of Bhardwaj’s vehicle. He was rushed to an area hospital for treatment. He died a short time after he arrived at the hospital from injuries he suffered in the crash.
The victim’s identity was withheld by authorities.
The 51-year-old man who had been riding in the back seat of Bhardwaj’s vehicle and the two people in the Toyota were uninjured in the crash.
Bhardwaj was pinned in his vehicle and had to be extricated from the wreckage. CHP officers investigating the fatal crash said that Bhardwaj displayed behavior consistent with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities have charged Bhardwaj with murder and driving under the influence of alcohol.
