In a story that reached national news, eight people were injured last Sunday when a mud racing vehicle crashed through a guardrail and into the crowd. USA Today reports.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Department issued a press release describing the incident. Three of the spectators were left in critical condition and five others were injured.
“Today what happened was what we all hoped doesn’t happen. Is a wreck while racing,” said Scott Smith, owner of Rock Solid Protection, an El Paso-based security firm.
Smith, speaking at a news conference, said that “the mud can tell the car where to go, at times” and that is what he said happened in this crash.
Three other track vehicles were struck in the crash. Police are investigating why the mud car left the track in the first place.
Motorsport events carry a lot of risk for drivers, but the audience also assumes some risk. Some of the worst crashes in racing history came from cars leaving the track and entering the crowd.
We hope that all the injured people in this crash recover swiftly, and we hope that race officials double down on their safety measures. If one of these injured parties decides to sue, any missing or weak safety measures will become crucial to their case.
