Sometimes there’s very little evidence after a fatal hit-and-run accident. This makes it hard for families to get closure and compensation afterward. One family in Los Angeles got lucky after the alleged killer left DNA evidence at the scene of his crash. KTLA reported on the arrest.
On Thursday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged the suspect with murder, carjacking, and felony hit-and-run after his arrest. He’s being held on $2.2 million bail. Police already had the man in custody on suspicion of robbery since February 11th.
Police stated to reporters that video caught the man approaching a truck and asking for a ride. When the driver refused, the suspect carjacked the vehicle and sped away, though the vehicle owner managed to climb into the truck bed.
The carjacker began weaving in and out of traffic and speeding according to witnesses. As he was crossing Olive Street, he struck and killed a bicyclist. Instead of stopping, he fled the scene.
Later, police found DNA evidence in the vehicle and matched the suspect to his record in the Combined DNA Index System, putting him in the vehicle at the time of the hit-and-run.
Our condolences go out to the family of the slain bicyclist. We hope that this latest information will enable them to seek compensation and justice against the one who killed their family member.
