One person is dead after a tow truck ran a red light and t-boned an SUV in Carmel Valley on Sunday night.
NBC affiliate Channel 7 in San Diego reports that the accident happened at approximately 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of El Camino Real and Carmel Valley Road. According to investigators with the San Diego Police Department, the driver of the SUV had the right of way when the tow truck struck the smaller passenger vehicle.
The victim in the crash has been identified as Thomas Royden, 81, who was a passenger in a Honda SRV driven by a 72-year-old woman who was reportedly hurt. Royden was rushed to an area hospital for treatment of the injuries he sustained in the collision. Police said in a statement to reporters that he later died.
The 72-year-old woman who had been driving the CRV was also injured in the accident. She was taken to the hospital for treatment. Her identity and current condition have not yet been released.
The registered owner of the tow truck is listed as Wind ‘n Sea Towing. The tow truck reportedly had some front end damage from the accident. The driver of the tow truck was uninjured in the crash.

Video surveillance footage shows the 49-year-old driver crossing the intersection against the light. NBC reporters were told by the owner of the tow truck company that the driver had been working for them for a year and that he has had no prior driving incidents.
The crash is still currently under investigation by the San Diego Police Department.
