A teacher and two teenage girls who lived nearby lent their assistance to the three victims and stayed with them until emergency crews were called to the scene. The three victims were rushed to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment in serious condition. The 8-year-old boy who was unresponsive at the crash scene later died at the hospital.
The teen driver stayed at the scene of the crash.
The victim has been identified as Alexander Vazquez, who was a student at Cesar Chavez Elementary School. The two other victims in the crash are currently listed in stable condition and are expected to be OK.
Police investigators do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the fatal crash. Luis McArthur with the Oxnard Police Department told reporters that it is possible that the teen driver was blinded by the sun and couldn’t see the people that were in the crosswalk.
Some students also witnessed the crash. School officials say that counselors have been made available for the students who were affected by the accident.
The fatal crash is still under investigation.
