Arachnophobia, or the fear of spiders, is a common fear in people. Mental health professionals rank the fear of spiders as being the third worst phobia or fear in the world. In the United States, it is estimated that approximately 30% of the population suffers from this phobia and is more prevalent in women than in men.
A woman who may also have arachnophobia was injured when she saw a spider in her car and crashed into a wooded area in near Cairo, a small town located in Upstate New York in Greene County. The Daily Gazette reported the accident happened on Wednesday, April 10th on Silver Spur Road.

Emergency crews from the Cairo Fire Department, Cairo Ambulance, Greene County Medics, and Greene County Sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene to help the woman. Investigators determined the cause of the accident was because the unidentified woman spotted a spider in the driver’s area of her vehicle. The woman panicked and crashed her vehicle when it struck an object beside the road. Her leg was injured in the crash, and the front end of her car was twisted and crumpled.
The Cairo Police Department posted photos of the crash and issued a statement on their Facebook page warning other drivers to be careful when it comes to unrestrained animals, pets or unexpected 8-legged passengers hitching a ride.
“We know that it is easier for some drivers than others,” police said. “But PLEASE, try to teach new drivers and yourselves to overcome the fear and pull over to a safe place. Lives depend on it.”
The Cairo Police Department also thanked the other agencies that were involved in assisting the woman after the accident.
